TURF TOPICS. ;(Bv “Argus.”) A southern critic writes as follows: “It is said that F. Porter will make a descent upon the jumping racing in Australia during the autumn, and that his team will include Paisano, Continuance, and Te Arai. The first-named is, we know, ouite himself, and if Te Arai stands to the collar the campaign should be a successful one.” S. Reid, who has been associated with Full Rate’s recent victories, has received a tempting offer "to go to the Argentine. If, as is more than probable, he accepts it, he will leave New Zealand next month. The position carries with' it a handsome retainer to do the riding for three stables. The ex-New Zealand jockey L. H. Hewitt was second on the list of winning jockeys in Austra-Hungarv last season, bis total of victories being 67. The ex-Victorian rider, B. Carsla'ke, was third with 63 wins, the leading jocko-" being E. Pretzner, who scored 7-1 -victories.
The Auckland rider Whittaker is proving irresistible at the small meetings. He Avas presented Avith a gold-mounted whip bv the Huntly R.C. on account of winning six events, and nearly equalled the performance at the Thames meeting on the first day, as lie steered five to victory. Though there is nothing definite in respect to shrdlu shrdlu shrdul slirdhi dlu there is, it is stated, reason to doubt Danube being seen at the post when the field lines up for the Wellington Cup. It is said to be more than probable that the crack three-year-old will be taken over to RandAviclc during the early autumn.
Los Angelos., Danube, Merrivonia, and Miss Mischief are the nominal favorites for the ‘Wellington Cup, wm<st Cold Lace, Theodore, Dearest, and Perl© d’Or are apparently the most fancied Telegraph Handicap candidates. What the last-named has done to account for his being specially sought after is hard to understand. On present appearances, it looks as if Air. G. D. Greenwood would head the list of winning owners for the 1910-11 season.
California who was reported during the last week of October to have broken down hopelessly, is said' to have made such a good recovery that his owner intends recommissioning him tliis month. Bobrikoff is also said to be mending satisfactorily, and hopes are expressed that he too will again) he in a position to carry silk. Los Angelos, who lias been given pride of place in the Wellington Cup Handicap, is getting through a sound preparation, and* is looking in capital buckle. His stable companion Formless, is also looking well, and R. O’Donnell is booked to leave for Trentham with this pair early next week. When Golden Slipper was howling along at the head of the A.J.C. Handicap field coming to the turn, says “The .Referee,” a win for her seemed something more than a possibility. However, she only added to her failures, as Blue Gem, who ran up to her soon after the straight was entered beat her home cleverly. Though Golden Slipper was topweight of the party her Australian performances to date do not merit such a high opinion of her, and had she cost a couple of hundred instead of over £4OOO in New Zealand, she would probably have been on the limit in handicaps ere now. Sir George Clifford will have a strong team at the 'Wellington Summer Meeting. The probables are Counterfeit, Avarice, Big Blast, Husbandman, Countermine, Tenterhook, Sharpshooter, and True Knight. The lastnamed four are at Palmerston North, and will verv likely stay there till the' eve of the Wellington meeting.
