THE SEWERAGE WORKS.

[TO TIIE EDITOR.]

Sir, —May I have the honor of using some of your valuable space to toll the ratepayers why in my opinion the sewerage works are costing more than the estimate made by Mr Marehant C.E. for the Borough. First, Mr. Marehant admits he made a mistake in regard to the estimating in connection with the the septic tank. He accounts for that by saying that one was contracted at- that price in Timaru. If his other estimates were made on a similar basis, it is surely time be should now go into them again It lias to be remembered that in Timaru shingle the same class exactly as at Napier is on the beach in unlimited quantities on one side of the 'harbor, and golden sand on the other. So you see that the two main factors in regird to these concrete constructed works are at hand in Timaru, whereas in Gisborne we have to rail the gravel in its rough state, and then, wash and screen it all. which is a very expensive process, no matter how it is done. Compare the two places then : One has the sand ■md gravel for about 2s delivered on to the mixing hoard ; at the other they cost I am quite sure bs on the mixing-board per yard respectively. Now I’m l sure I have made a big estimate for Timaru, and a very low estimate for Gisborne. Then again I saw that Mr Marehant siicl they met water in places at Timaru and had! to pump it. Well it must have cost very little to pump, compared with what it' will cost under the conditions here. It is not the water that is the trouble ; it is the water and sandy silt here. If some of the ratepayers would take a walk round our sewerage works and see the dithculties that have to he contended with, I am quite sure that they will be convinced that the project is going to cost a great deal more than Air. Mareliant- estimates. As I know Timaru as well as Gisborne 1 claim that I am entitled to say what 1 do know, ami what I think. Like many others I rather like the way in which our own Borough Engineer goes about his work. I am, etc., COMMONSEXSE.
