SLANDER ACTION IN HIGH LIFE.
SOCIETY LADY SUES HER FATHER-IN-LAW.
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT.)
LONDON, Jan. 17. Mrs. Horace West lias brought an action accusing Sir Algernon West, her father-in-law, of slander which caused her exclusion from court functions. (Received Jan. 17, 10.25 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 17.
The West case came before Justice Darling at the Court of King’s Bench. Mr. Duke, the plaintiff’s counsel, stated that the marriage had been happy for some years, then owing to the husband's misconduct her health had suffered, and a deed of separation was agreed to in 1900. Sir Algernon West slanderously informed Viscount Althorpe, then Lord Chamberlain, Mrs. Asquith, and others, that the plaintiff was responsible for the separation, owing to her hopeless extravagance. The Court upheld Lord Altliorpe’s refusal, in the public interest, to disclose whether Sir Algernon West made the statement to him. The case was adjourned.
