SIR FRANCIS GALTON
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION'COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, Jan. 18. . The death of Sir Francis Galton is announced.
[Sir Francis Galton was a grandson of the famous Dr. Erasmus Darwin, and was born in 1822. About 60 years ago he made extensive explorations in South Africa. He attained considerable celebrity as a scientist, and is renowned as the exponent of what is now known as Galton’s Law—that Ml individual inherits one-fourth of his character from each parent, and oneeighth from each grandparent. < He has written many works on scientific subjects, and was a member of the Royal Society and other scientific bodies.]
A CANTERBURY PIONEER

The death is announced of Mrs. Jane Deans, relict of the late John Deans, of Riccarton, one of the original settlers on the Canterbury Plains. The late Mrs. Deans was the eldest daughter of Mr. James Mcllwraith, of Auchenfiower, Ayrshire. She was married in September, 1852, and, with her husband, arrived at Lyttelton in the Minerva on 2nd February, 1853. She shared the privations and hardships of the pioneer days, and to the last preserved all her faculties.
