LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS.
TURANGAN UI HOTEL. A marked sign of the progress which the town is making is the activity which is prevailing at present in the building trade. A large number of buildings are in course of construction in the borough, and builders arc hampered on account of being unable to obtain as many carpenters and painters as they require. Among tiie latest improvements to local business premises may be mentioned the extensive alterations which have been effected to the Turanganui Hotel. Mr. D. J. Barry, the new proprietor, lias had extensive alterations and improvements carried out, which will make this well-known hostelry thoroughly up-to-date in its appointments. The effect of the alterations have been to secure the complete privacy of the residential portion of the house. The.new licensee, Mr W. Samson, has also done hi? part most thoroughly, and lias had the whole building complete! renovated anr re-furnished throughout. An innovation which the public should appreciate in the providing of a sittingroom for the use of ladies waiting for the departure of the launch. • This room opens off the private entrance, and is cosily furnished. In the- new scheme of improvements, important attention has been paid to the bar accommodation. The billiard-room has been removed, and the space it originally occupied is devoted to a handsomely-appointed private bar., White and gold effects have been used with excellent results in the decorations. The public bar has been constructed on tiie same lavish scale, -and is oval in shape. A description of this bar appeared in these columns some time ago. Both bars are provided with a hot and cold water service, and an excellent system of drainage to the river has been installed. A noted feature of the improvements is the first-class filter installed in each bar, which ensures a suplpy of the purest of water. Insulated ice-chests have been built into the counters. and consequently the coolest of allkinds of drinks can be provided in the hottest of weather. Altogether this popular and wellknown house has been improved on the most modern lines of hotel construction.
