A munted parade of the A squadron 2nd Regiment W.M.R. was held on Mr George.Witters property at Waiohika on Saturday*. There was a muster of fiftysix, and the squadron was put through their annual field firing. The City Band gave a successful performance on the,Trafalgar Rotunda last evening. Tlieer was an exceptionally large audience, and the excellent programme was heartily, appreciated. The manner in which the Band played one of the test pieces was highly creditable, and the trombone and cornet solos were especially well received. A collection was taken up in aid of the contest fund, and the members of the Band wish to thank Mrs Scott for her valuable assistance in obtaining contributions towards the expenses of competing at- the contest. The Strangers’ Tea Committee of the Y.M.C.A., at yesterday’s tea welcomed two more strangers to the district, one a new arrival from the Old Country. Air J. Peach gave an address to the gathering. The directors regard this phase of the Y.M.C.A. work as a very important service, and desire to urge upon the residents of Gisborne, that those knowing of new arrivals should communicate with the secretary of the Association, that the new comers may recive such welcme, counsel, and assistance in seeking employment, as the Association can give. The Custom-house weekly return for the week ending Saturday January 21st shows the revenue collected here >to be as follows: —Customs duties, £704 2s lid; surtax, £l6 12s Sd ; beer duty, £49 17s 6d; other receipts, £3; total £773 13s Id. Only one nomination having been received, Air R. Barker has been elected to the vacancy on the Pouawa Road Board. Owing to the temporary insufficiency of the water supply, the Borough Council by advertisement elsewhere notify that it is not to be used for hosing down purposes or watering gardens. As soon as the necessary improvements as recommended by Air Alarchant are carried out, it is hoped the trouble will be removed.
Precaution should l he exorcised by picnickers who visit the Kaiti beach n. account of the inflammable nature of Wie grass. The outbuildings adjoining Air A. H. AVallis’ residence had a narrow escape from being destroyed by a fire originated in the scrub a few days ago. Another outbreak ccurred on Saturday but it was suppressed in the evening. Hr H. Ormnd, when driving over the aiti bridge on Friday with his motor car, had a narrow escape from a serious accident. He was following behind a three horse dray, and when about halfway across the bridge the two leaders swerved, and the car was iambed between the horses and tin' dray. Air Ormond jumped out and seized the leaders by the head, and fortunately they remaided quiet until the ear was extkricated.
To get up in the morning and be faced with the necessity of shaving before leaving home for work, is an experience which most men have. A local gentleman who had slept in rather long the other morning hastily jumped out of bed with half an hour to shave, dress, have breakfast, and reach his place of business. His razor was not in the best of order, and he regarded the operation of shaving with no favor. However, to his utter surprise and joy his good wife had, on the previous day, had the foresight to purchase one of Morse’s patent “Safacto” razors, which she there and then presented to him. He tried it, and reached work in time and smiling. Call and see the “Safacto” at either of Alorse’s shops in Gladstone Road. Twelve months’ guarantee given and .setting free.*
