SALVATION ARMY ENTERPRISE.
ACTIVITY IN AUCKLAND. ~ ' Adjutant- Melksham officer in charge of the local branch of the Salvation Army, returned from a visit- to Auckland on Saturday morning. During his stay in the northern city, Adjutant Melksham. was present at several Army functions. Chief among these was the opening of the new Home for Inebriates situated, at Rutlie’s Island. The Adjutant speaks- in glowing terms of the institution and the modem methods employed there. “The new Home has some 70 beds in it, and already there are OS inmates,” said Adjutant Alelkshani toxu "limes” representative on his return. The officer in charge of the Ruthe’s Island Home is Staff-Captain Barnes, who has with him an efficient staff. Among, those present at the opening ceremony, which took place last Tuesday, were Messrs Lang and Poole, AT.sF. The par tv which attended the opeuimr arrived at the island at 11 a.m. and had luncheon there, leaving for the return journey to Auckland at 2.30 p.m. Hie Pakatoa Island Home is undergoing renovation, and will be converted into a home for female inebriates. Brigadier Brav has already received several applications for entry, and it- -is likeh- that, even with the new home to relieve the pressure, there will be a shortage of accommodation.
The Workman’s Hotel, erected by the Army at Auckland, was opened . on Monday. The building is said to bo a fine one, and is very well furnished. Besides the usual accommodation, there a:o some 18 beds, installed and maintained from an endowment made by the late Mrs. Knox, which are open to destitute persons free of charge.
