Tlie latest Labor Journal states that the position in regard to trade generally in Gisborno is unchanged from last month’s report. Employment is plentiful, and there is every prospect of a continuance of the same for some time to come. The traders in town have had a very successful Christmas week, and sales in all lines have been very satisfactory, and in many cases better than the usual Christmas trade. ! Building trades: Bricklaying busy, with every prospect of continuing so. Carpentry and joinery very busy, and plenty of work in view. Painting very busy; a slight slackening-off is expected after the holidays, hut there is plenty of work coming on. Plastering—All hands fully employed. Plmhing and gasfitting busy, and future prospects good. Woodworking trades: Cabinetmaking and upholstering busy; all hands fully employed. Coopering busy. Sash and door factories busy, and every prospect of continuing so. Sawmilling busy; tlie future prospects are decidedly good. Wood-turning, etc., fairly busy, • no hands out of employment. Engineering trades : Agricultural implement making—All hands are employed, hut are not very busy. Fitting and turning—All men employed, and future prospects are fairly good. .Leather tradps: Bootmaking and renairshops—All hands fully employed. Saddlery and harnessmaking busy, and future prospects good. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery very busy; a considerable amount of overtime has been worked during the month. Tailoring (order; very busy; overtime has been worked in all the shops. Retail trades: Clothing—Sales are reported as being execptioonally good during the month. Drapery —Good business is reported, and the holiday sales have been very satisfactory. Groceries during the month have been good, and the Christmas week has been exceptionally so. Printing trades: Bookbinding and printing—All hands fully employed, and future prospects good. Meat-freezing, etc. —Tanning, currying, and fellmongoring busy, hut the maximum is not expected to be reached until February. _ Slaughtering, freezing, and preserving—The local meatworks are not so busy as in former years, but it is fully expected that the season will come up to tlie general average later on. Coachbuilding trades: Blaeksnnthing busy —All hands fully employed. Coach and carriage building—Ail hands are fully employed, and men are inquired for.

Cycle and motor trades fairly busy: no hands out of employment. Agricultural operations: Farming, dairying, etc. —The dairying looks very bright; good rains have fallen, making feed plentiful, and tlie season in both farming and dairying is confidently expected to l>e a good one. Unskilled labor: Twenty-nine men have applied for employment during the month, and twenty have been sent to Otoko Railway works and two to private employment. Nearly all the applicants are from other districts. There is no difficulty in finding employment for men who are willing and able to work.
