THE BAGDAD RAILWAY.
ITS IMPORTANCE TO GERMANY.
THE sSTTORY OF ITS ORIGIN
The opinion is held in German diplomatic circles that the Bagdad railway scheme which led to the new understanding between Germany and Russia, and as" a result of which the triple entente between England, Russia, and France was seriously threatened, is tiro indirect outgrowth of a sugegstion made by the late Cecil Rhodes, when he told the Kaiser that South Africa was Britain’s corner of the world, and that no one was going to interfere with it. but that Asia Minor and Mesopotamia were Germany’s business. From that day the Ivaisor has never failed by every means' in his power, to work for the expansion of German interests and influence along the lines suggested by the famous empire builder. It is pointed out that the Bagdad railway is the central thread upon which the regions indicated by Rhodes are strung, and is unquestionably destined to be the backbone of the German development that is bound to take place therein.
