ROWING.

GISBORNE ROWING CLUB

The weekly meeting of the above club was held at the Masonic Hotel last evening, there being present: Messrs G. H. Puflett (captain), 0. Hansen, W. ,S. (loleman, I. G. Quigley, H. Tocher, and D. H. Faram. It was decided that the next races be in double sculls, open to both grades, entries to close at the boathouse at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Mr._A._J. Cox having kindly donated trophies for these races. The captain reported receipt of a pair of sculls, which lie said were very satisfactory. A general overhaul of the plant will take place next Sunday morning, and members are asked to assist. The resignation of Mr. A. Donald as secretary’ to the Club having been received Mr. P. It. McConvillc was elected to fill the vacancy. NOTES BY •‘OARSMAN.” The representative crews for the Gisborne Rowing Club have now been chosen, and the selectors are to be, in no small measure, congratulated on the success they have made of such an arduous task. It is very gratifying, indeed, to members to see the interest this year’s selectors have taken in the choice of men to represent the shed. They have, by regular attendance at the shed, acquainted themselves with the worth of anv active member. The confidence the committee placed in them is, in my opinion, fully justified. It is my intention, from time to time, to criticise the progress or otherwise of the members of representative _ crews. This week I purpose dealing with the personnel of the senior crew. Hamilton (stroke) is a man who has great possibilities ; he will require judicious coaching over the two-mile course. He would do well to try and corner his opponents: In- persistent tackling and resourceful tactics. Richards (3), a well-tried oarsman, always ready to do his bit. He requires coaching,-and should particularly pay attention to sliding scat work, not sliding too soon or falling away from his car. Tocker (2) is a 'man who has great possibilities; he should avoid pell-mell runnin gab-out on the sliding plane, and remember that science is required in the manipulation of the oar. Cowan (bow) lias not rowed _ much this season, but is capable of doing full justice to his position. He should “lift” straight from the back and shoulders, bringing the lens into play simultaneously. It lias been rumored that Cowan (bow) is unable to row this season, and if such proves to be true, I think an excellent- senior crew would be Hansen (stroke), Hamilton (3), Richards (2), Tocker (how). Hansen is a man who has always had my eye; he is, in. my opinion, a most capable general, and m acquisition to any “rep.” crew. He has lately shouldered responsibilities, and these may prevent his accepting an offer from the selectors, but I feel sure if lie could be induced to accede to a request to stroke the seniors, his doing so would be appreciated by the members.
