Mr J. Liddell Kelly, well-known in journalistic circles in the Dominion, has accepted the editorship cf die Ashburton “Mail,” and takes up his duties m April.
The Hon. E. W. Pennefatlier. K.C., of Perth, and ex-Attorney-General for West Australia, is at present in Rotorua for the benefit of his health.
A Press Association. telegram from Dargaville states that a strong deputation representing the Reform League, waited: upon Mr H. J. Slade, county chairman, and asked him to oppose Mr Stallworthy at the next general election. Mr Slade said he could hardly see his way clear just yet to give a definite answer, but he would forward a definite reply to the deputation within a fortnight. Mr J. D. Henry, the visiting oil expert, is booked to leave for the south by tlie steamer to-morrow evenin. Prior to leaving New Zealand, in which country, by the way, 'Mr Henry has travelled over 3000 miles, he is to be entertained at a complimentary dinner at New Plymouth tendered by the Chamber of Commerce and a number of local business men. Dr. T. Wi Rcpa is at present engaged in visiting the various Maori kaingas of the district in connection with the recent outbreak of typhoid at several of them. Mr. W. A. G. Penlington, of the local High School staff, lias received cable advice from England to the effect that he has been successful in passing the final section of the B.A. degree. Our Napier correspondent telegraphed that Mr Waler Nicholson was yesterday admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court by the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, on the application of Mr Lusk. The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar) is expected to return from South to-morrow morning.
The name of Wi Neliua is freely discussed as a candidate for the Northern Maoi seat at the next election. He is a soipof Eru Neliua, chief of the kainga at Whakapara, and was educated at St. Stephen’s School. He was one of Warbrick’s Maori football team that toured Britain. TVi Neliua says that he will continue the policy formulated by Hone Hoke.
