The Hon. J. Carroll is to leave Gisborne on Sunday next in order to attend the Cabinet meeting to be held prior to the departure of Sir Joseph Ward for England. I’lm Right Rev. Dr. Averill. Bishop of Waiapu, arrived from the south yesterday. He~cor.ducted the confirmation service at Holy Trinity Church List evening, and will this morning leave town on a t-our of the northern section of the district. He expects to return to Gisborne shortly before Easter, and to be in Napier in time for that festival.

The Borough Council last night decided to grant a month’s leave of absence on full pay to the nightwatchman (Mr. Vi • Fraser), who owing to a recent accident wiil be compelled to undergo an operation. Mr W. Hamilton Irvine, of Gisborne, who was for seven years secretary of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association,' has been elected an honorary life member of the Association in recognition of his services. Mr Irvine is the first honorary life member elected since the incorporation of the Association. ' Messrs 11. R. Groome and E. Lane, members of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board, and Mr Thomson, secretary of the Board, were passengers from the South by the Mokoia yesterday. Mr C. R. Pollem Commissioner of Crown Lands, arrived from the south yesterday to supervise the Land ballotnow in progress. The newly appointed vicar for Wairoa, the Her. J. W. Simkin, left- Home for the Dominion on February loth. The Rev. L. Mackay has been appointed curate at Havelock North. A Press Association telegram states that Mr E. Tregear, late Secretary for Labour, was entertained last night by the Wellington branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union, who presented him u'itli an illuminated, address and gold pendant in recognition of his services to Labour during his term of office. A gold-mounted’ handbag was also presented to Mrs Tregear.
