SMOKERS AND-NON-SMOKERS.. Dr. George L. Meylan, director of physical culture at Columbia Universiy, publishes the results of studies he has made to determine tlhe effect- of tobacco smoking on university students. His summary, acquired after two years’ observation of 116 smokers and 108 nonsmokers, shows '(states the “Standard”) that smokers are better athletes, and non-smokers are better students. The ages at which the smokers whom lie examined acquired the habit ranged from 1 man at 7 years to 18 at 16 years, 30 at 17 years, 16 at 19 years, and 1 at 21 years. Tables of the average physical measurements of the students examined Avere prepared to show the developmentover the two-year period. Slxy-six students who smoked gained an average of 81b. in weight, against a gain of 61b. by 77 non-smokers. The smokers averaged a net increase of 1.2 centimetres in height, against 1.1 for the non-smokers. In Tung capaciy, however, the • non-smo-kers led-, gaining .20, as against .08 for the smokers. In total strength the smokers were with an increase of 103 units, as against 101. In scholarship, the non-smokers had a. distinct, advantage. The smokers; averaged : 89. per cent;'in their studies at entrance, 62 per cent, in the first two years in college, and had 7 per cent failures. The non-smokers averaged 91 per cent, in their entrance examinations, 69 per cent, in their first two years, and had 4 per cent, failures.
