MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

IMPORTANT MEETING OF COMMITTEE. STRONG PROTEST BY THE MAYOR A meeting of the Works Committee of the Borough Council was held yesterday afternoon. Seen, subsequently by a “Times” representative, the Mayor (Mr W- D. Lysnar) explained that the several, matters referred to the committee for consideration had been dealt with. In regard to Esplanade road, the bad state of which was brought under the Council’s notice by the Sheepfarmers’ Company, the engineer reported that a large sewer drain would have to run down the road; consequently, the value of any permanent work done now would be lost when that drain was put in. It was decided to- do temporary repairs by means of sand filling in. THE SEWERAGE WORKS. The specifications .supplied by Mr Marchant in connection with the sewerage tenders were also considered by the meeting. The borough engineer made a number of suggestions for their alteration, .and eventually, after some discussion the matter was adjourned until next week', in order to leceive a written from Mr Paterson. The Mayor protested against the delay which was being occasioned in calling for tenders for the work, and stated that no one of the suggestions which had been made commended itself to him, as being advisable. While agreeing with the recommendation to consult the borough solicitors on the legal aspect, he contended that matters of detail could best be ‘discussed when Mr Marchant was present. Mr Lysnar further intimated that ho would not attend the next meeting of the committee on the subject.. He held that the responsibility lay entirely with the consulting engineer, and that it would be quite wrong to attempt to shift it on to the borough engineer or the Council.
