“A CANOPY OF ASHES.”
SUBSIDENCE OF MOUNT i VESUVIUS. [UNITED PEESS ASSOCIATION-COPYEIGHT.J (Received March 13, 11.30 p.m.) ... ROME, March 13. The crust around the crater of Mt. Vesuvius, for 30 yards in length and 24 feet in "hickness, has subsided, causing shocks and rumbling noises. The upper station of the funicular has been damaged. An imposing canopy of ashes overhangs the mountain; the crater seems lower, and Mt. Vesuvius looks to be decapitated.
