LADY DENMAN AS A HOSTESS

Baron Denman, who has been appointed to succeed Lord Dudley as Go-vernor-General of Australia, \a ill lie one of the youngest' men avlio has ei’er held such an important position. He served, in the South African War as captain commanding the 35t1l (Middlesex) Squadron, of the Imperial Yeomanry, and ivas Avounded. He Avas also a lieutenant in.-the Royal Scots. . Baron Denman avus Lord-m-W silting to the late King EdAvard from 1905 to 1907, and has been Captain of the Hon. Corps of Gentlemen at Arms since 1907. In 1909 lie ivas appointed Chairman of Committees and Deputy-Speaker of the House of Lords. He married, in 1903. Gertrude Alary, daughter of Sir Weetinan Dickinson Pearson, first Baron Cowdray, head of the firm of S. Pearson and Son, foreign bankers of London. He has one son, the Hon. Thomas Denman, horn August 2, 1905, and one daughter, the Hon. Anne Judith Denman, horn in 190/'. Baron Denman is a J;P. of Sussex, and has residences at 4 Buckingham Gate, S.W.; at Stony Middleton, Sheffield; and at Balcomhe Place, Sheffield. He is a member of the Army and Navy, Brooks’, and Marlborough Clubs. He is a keen' sportsman, and is tone] of billiards, golf,' shooting, and hunting. Lady Denman is a well-known Liberal hostess, and of her the “Graphic on January 25, 1908, said “Lady" Denman, in spite of her youth, is phiyiug a very prominent part just- now in _ Liberal feminine councils; and has made herself the Children’s Companion. .1 he social honors during the coming session arc likely to be equally divided between Mrs. Harcourt and Lady Den'mnn, avlio has a strong ally and auxiliary in her mother, Lady Pearsofi.”
