— NEW PICTURE THEATRE. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.J AUCKLAND, March 18. A syndicate which is said to have control of considerable capital has been promoted for the erection of a new picture theatre near 'the top of Symonds Street. The building, which is estimated to cost about £BO6O, is to be completed about October next. It will have accommodation for 1500 people. WANGANUI COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. * , WANGANUI, March 18. Old boys of the Wanganui Collegiate School, who are presenting a chapel to that institution, last night, through the executive, accepted the tender of Meuli (Wanganui) at something over £4OOO. The foundation-stone will be laid on Easter Sunday. A large gathering is expected from all parts of the Dominion. A YOUTHFUL TRAVELLER. WELLINGTON, March 19. On the arrival of tlie train from Dannevirke last evening it was found thatamong the passengers was a. boy eight, years old, who gave the name of O’Leary. There was no one to meet him at the station, and the only account the loy could give of himself was that he had come to Wellington to meet his uncle Jim. The police took charge of the boy wlio, however, disappeared from the police station this morning, and lias not been discovered since. He had Is 2d in his pocket, and it thought he may have gone riding on the tramcars. The boy had no hat or boots. THE WAIHI MINE. There has been some uncertainty as to the date of the annual meeting of the Waihi Mining Company in London. It is now announced by the Wellington Waihi shareholders’ committee that tlie meeting is almost certain to be held about tlie 20th of May, and proxies can not be received later than 17th March. Such proxies are valid without being signed before witnesses. DROUGHT IN NELSON DISTRICT. NELSON, March 18. There has been no rain here for some weeks, but there was rain in showers at Murchison yesterday, and more rain is threatening. There are indications of the break-up of the drought in the Buller district.
CANTERBURY TRADES COUNCIL. CHRISTCHURCH, March 19. Tlie Canterbury Trades and Labour Council has decided, in connection with the Coronation medals, that, at the election of school committees, a protest be made re the action of the Government in having the medals manufactured out of the Dominion. Regarding tlie recent conference on the iron industry, it was decided to support any duty being placed on imported articles. A notice of motion was tabled proposing that the resolution constituting the Council a district 'branch of the Federation of Labour be rescinded. INSPECTION OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS.
The Hon. D. Buddo informed a deputation from the Christchurch Eire Board that lie would take,.. opinions from electrical experts on the question of the necessity for electrical installations being periodically inspected, and if the opinions upheld the necessity therefor, he would see what could be done by introducing legisation giving Fire Boards power to make periodical inspection and charge fees for the same. Personally, he was of the opinion that Boards should have the power mentioned. A MOTORING MISHAP.
Whilst motoring home in Sydenham shortly after midnight this morning Dr. Terras Bel ran into a sanitary cart. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the car was, severely damaged, and Dr. Bell, who was alone in the car, was pinned against the seat by the steering gear. The cart- and the car were carrying the- regulation lights, but rain was falling at the time,, and probably obscured the motorist’s vision. Dr. Bell had three ribs broken and was badly cut about the hands and arms, and suffered severe shock. A COUNCIL’S DILEMMA. TIMARU, March 18. - The Mackenzie County Council is freed with a difficulty in enforcing its heavy traffic . by-law against traction, engine traffic. The defence raised in certain prosecutions was that the Council was nan est, never having been properly constituted. The question has to bo fought out.
SHORTAGE OF RAILWAY TRUCKS
The perennial complaint of the shortage of railway trucks in again being heard in this "district. The demand is ever: more urgent than usual, as the threshing season has been fine, and the short straw enabled the' mills to make quick work.. Record tallies for a day’s work have been made. A DESERTING SEAMAN.
The seaman who deserted from the Kumara at Sydney. was recognised by the captain of the Kumara on the Evert-on. Grange here, and arrested for desertion. A charge was heard against him to-day, and the S.M. dismissed the case on the ground that the man had an excuse, offering from a broken jaw, the result of a fall when he left the Kumara.
“TWO-UP” PLAYERS CONVICTED. Five men charged with playing “tworip” at the Pareora freezing works last Sunday were caught in a Kush by Detective Fahey and Constable McLatchy. There was difficulty in, identifying them, as a party of a score- or so bolted into the rooms when the police cycled up. Tlitee were dismissed, but two were convicted and fined £3, or 14-days . RAIN BADLY WANTED. Rain is much needed in South Canterbury, and. the country is very dry . There Is no growth in the feed.. The recent rainfall in the south did. not reach so far, except ineffectual drizzles. WELCOME, HOME. The victorious members of the Fire Brigade returned from Hokitika this evening, and were given, an enthusiastic welcome by the Mayor and a large crowd of townspeople.
