NEW ZEALAND GRAIN.

FINE SAMPLE FOR OVERSEAS EXHIBITIONS.

There is at present on view in Christchurch, a very fine display of grain intended for the forthcoming exhibitons in London and Roubaix (France). There may be seen samples of grain in the sheaf of practically every variety of wheat, oats, and barley that is grown in the country, and the samples have been gathered by the Agricultural Department from all over the Dominion. There are also collections .which were intended to be displayed- ab-ddi£ winter shows in the North -and South Islands. Most of the best samples of wheat came from North and South Canterbury, and it is interesting to note that the old established wheats, such as velvet and red chaff, Hunters, White Pearl, solid straw Tuscan, and red Tuscan, are generally better in the sample than the newer varieties, such as Federation, Sensation, Treasure de Noe and Bordier.. For seme reason or other must of the Bordier seems to be a hit empty in the tips, and the sample of Federation shown is very short in the straw and light in the head. On the other hand, the varieties first named are represented by some splendid samples. Most of the oats have come from Otago and Southland, and generally they are a beautiful lot. Ae far as the barley is concerned the Blenheim district, which is usually regarded as being about the best barleygrowing locality in the South Island, if not in the Dominion., has to give place for excellence to the representative display from Central Otago. Some very fine samples indeed have been sent from Arrowtown and 1 Queenstown districts. Judging from what may be seen now. says the ‘ Press,” New Zealand should have no reason to he ashamed of her products in this particular line
