Lord Curzon initiated a debate in the House of Lords on the- question of the Bagdad railway. Lord Alorley declared -that if Turkey’s settlement was acceptable, the Government was willing, upon condition that Turkey would use _ her influence with the Sheikh of Koweit to permit the terminus of the railway to be at Koweit, to withdraw the objection to the increase in the Turkish customs. Britain was sincerely desirous of a settlement, but adhered to the position which Lord Lansdowne expressed in 1903.
