THE PANAMA CANAL.

TRYING TO GET A COALING STATION. The United States Consular Agent at Manzanilla, Mexico, reports that- the Toyo Ivisen Ivaisha, Japan’s most influential maritime ■company, has been negotiating for a coaling station at Campos, the Pacific terminus of the Mexican railway. The information was sent to Avashmgton on March 1, but has only now been made public, and it is believed that this matter played an important part in stimulating mobilisation. The probable effect of the concession would not only give Japan a naval coaling station, but would also place m the way of the Japanese the possibility to dump cheap Japanese coal near the Panama Canal. The big interests controlling . the Alaskan coaling concessions and the American coaling trade were naturally alarmed.
