BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough .Council was held last night. Present*: The Mayor (Mr W. D. Lysnar), Crs. Hepburn, Maynard, Darton, Clayton, Jackson, Pettie. The reception of deputations occupied some considerable time, and the ordinary business was not proceeded with until just prior to H p.m. CORRESPONDENCE. An application was received from the peqretary and* chairman of the City Band, asking for the usual annual subsidy. A schedule attached to the letter showed the amounts paid by other municipalities to their bands, the lowest being £SO oer annum and the highest (Waihi Federal Band!), £l5O per annum.
It was decided to donate up to £2O as in former years. Mr J. D. Parsons wrote stating that he was now well again and .ready to take up the duties of ranger and poundkeeper for the Council. It -was decided to appoint Mr Parsons to the positions he sought. Mr J. Guthrie, contractor, applied for permission to unload! shingle l at Stanley road siding for his contract with the Cook County Council on Ormond road- , „ , The engineer reported favourably on the request, and it was granted. A petition was read signed by J. 0. Witty, J. W. Levey, and G. Bull, asking the Council to waive the by-law in regard to iron chimneys at the summer residences, Kaiti beach. After some discussion, it was decided to refer the matter to the inspector. Messrs John Dutihie and Co. wrote advising having’ forwarded, per medium of their Wellington house, a small box containing templates of (lift tails and fishplates supplied to the Council. ceived.Mr E. T. Symes, manager of the Bank of Astralasia, wrote stating that as the meeting was the last one of the financial year, the Council should pass a resolution to borrow, By way of draft, in anticipation for next year in’ terms of the Act. It was decided to pess the resolution, and to make application for a £14,000 overdraft limit. The acting-chief postmaster wrote in reference to the lopping of trees in' Peel street. He pointed out that during a gale on the 13th ult., the trees in Peel, street broke two of the Department’s wire, and 1 Before repairs could be effected it had .been found necessary to lop off some branches. Later ontlie branches were sawn off neatly. The letter also stated that the trunks of the treese were, not damaged in any way, and the* question of future work is’ being considered.—The letter was receivd'. A notification was rceived from the District Engineer’s ■ office, Wellington, that the Railway Department would give the Council the lease of the right-of-way for the tramway on the Department's land near the railway station, on the usual conditions' —viz;,,a year-to-year lease at £1 per annum. —The letter was referred to the Works Committee-.. ’ ■
