SITTINGS AT MASTERTON. LPER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, March 27. . The sittings of the Supreme Court commenced at Masterton to-day before • Sir Robert- Stout, Chief Justice. He congratulated the district on the progress made during the past 46 years, and the- absence of any serious crime. Duly one resident in the Masterton electoral district had been convicted since February. 1909, namely a Chinaman. In the Magistrate’s Court, too, criminal cases showed a decrease from 391 for 1969 to 191 for 1916. He knew of no other district in the colonies where there was sucli a. diminution in crime. He congratulated tM district on the fact. The grand jury found true hills in the cases: Rex v. Henry Walker, housebreaking at Mangatainoka ; Rex v. Leo Barker, arson; Rex v. Frank Newman DixOh, mischief; Rex v. John Jackson, three charges of indecent assault. NOT GUILTY. In the Supreme Court to-day, in a case in which John Newman Dixon was charged with mischief in shooting a bull belonging to one James Turley of Carterton, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, stating that the shooting was not wiiful.
