THE DREDGE MAUI.
RESULT OF NINE MONTHS’ WORK
During the progress of the Harbour Board meeting yesterday, the -Chairman announced that he had received a report from Mr A. Park, dredgemaster, stating that the -dredgings of the Maui from- June 23rd, 1910, to March 24th. 1911, were as follows:—Rock, 44.5i0 tons; clay, 14,480 tons; silt, 10.320 tons; papa rock and clay, 2828 tons; clay and silt, 19,370 tons—total, 116,960 tons. , „ The Chairman said that the resultshowed' that the dredge was not clearing silt out of the river, -but rock and solid clay. The dredge had had to dig out from her berth, and! had, not been in a position to float about and go where she wanted. What -had been attempted was to get tlie channel cut so that she might get out and 1 in of the river. He considered that the dredge had done quite £12,000 worth of good to the river and all the steamers which had come in had -been able to do so with very little delay. Only 400 ft. of rock remained to be cut through and' then; he held, they would see that the dVlaui; would do even better work. The suit,of her nine months’ working was most satisfactory, and when the channel was completed: the- dredge could get to work with her sand pumps and clear the silt away. , , , Mt Parker planned that, although the dredge had done good work, he believed 1 that there- was now less water in the river. Tlki Chairman explained that the figures of the depths of water were only along the wharves, where the dredge had not been able to get. -
