DECLINE OF CHURCH ATTENDANCE.

AY HAT IS THE REASON ? The “Christian Commonwealth,” which some time ago discussed the cline in church membership among Nonconformists, shown for official returns, now notes that this year Congregationalists have 1587 fewer members, and Baptists 3775, while of scholars either loses about 3000. Not only is this decline increasing while population grows, but in the most popular parts— London, Lancashire and Yorkshire — it is going on fastest. This paper suggests a congress of the churches to consider the matter. YY riting upon the newspaper disclosures, various Nonconformist leaders offer various views as to the cause. Sir Robert Perks hints that “pulpit politicians” are to blame. Another suggestion is that Nonconform ministers do not do enough ‘‘spade wont’ in the way of seeing individuals A point noted elsewhere until regard of the modern Sunday in London is tlie immense growth of Sunday concerts. On a recent Sunday there were—Sousa at the Palladium in the afternoon ; Fanny Davies, Zelie de Lussan and Landon Ronald’s Symphony Orchestra at- the Albert Hall, and Sir . Henry YY*ood’s orchestra at the Queen s Hall, and in the evening the Beecliam Symphony Orchestra at the Palladium, and a grand concert at the Alhambra. Ihe churches have certainly a formidable rival here.
