MONTHLY MEETING

. ' [SPECIAL TO TIMES.] WAIPIRO BAY., April 1. At the monthly meeting of the Waiapu County CoAincil there Avere present : K. S. Williams (chairman), A. B. Williams, Knox, T. S. Williams, Heald, PoAvell, and Murphy. A letter aa’us received from Mr. F. J. Williams pointing out the necessity of proceeding Avitli tlie formation of a neAv road over the hill from Ariaura to Pokura Valley.—Cr. A. B. Williams moved and Cr. Murphy seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to lay off the Avork and call for tenders as soon as possible.—Carried. The Waiapu Hospital Board Avrote applying for contributions, £2oo.—Receded. Tlie Tourist . Department Avrote draAving attention to the lack of finger posts on roads in the County.—ReceKea. The Chief Health Officer, in reply to the Council’s telegram regarding typhoid fever, Avrote that the Hon. A. T. Ngata had arranged with Dr. Buck to attend to the outbreak. After lengthy discussion, the Chairman moA r ed and Cr. PoAA'ell seconded, that an urgent telegram be sent to the Chief Health Officer, asking Aylien be Avould be able to come to Waipiro to confer Avith the Council.—Carried. The Under-Secretary for Public Works Avrote re land taken for a cemetery at Tokomaru Bay.—Received. The Valuer-General Avrote re subsidy for 1909-10. The same had been correctly completed.—Received. The Department of Agriculture Avrote stating that the CounciTs action declaring Bathurst burr a noxious Aveed Avould be duly Gazetted. Cr. Knox moved and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that the Inspector _ of Noxious Weeds be AA’ritten to, asking him to take steps to have the Aveed cleared.—The motion Avas agreed to. Messrs. Cranby and Co. Avrote stating that they Avould confirm the Council’s order for timber, except that all landing charges Avould haA r e to be paid by the Council.—After some discussion as to Avhnt avos meant by landing charges, Cr. Heald moA’ed and Cr. Knox seconded, that the matter be left to the Chairman and Engineer to deal Avith.— The motion Avas carried. Air. A. T. Ritchie wrote asking for an increase in tlie alloAvanoe for horse work on roads.—Cr. A. B. Williams moA r ed and Cr. T. S. Williams seconded, that the overseer he instructed to authorise tlie necessary horse Avork, and make an allowance of 6s per day per horse.—The motion Avas agreed to. Mr. Geo. Bvoavii Avrote asking the Council to grie notice to Himiona Apulian, Piripi Polie, and Hori Maliue to remove fences from across road.—Notice to be seut at once. a Messrs. P. and C. Clark Avrote asking that a portion of Kopuapounamu grant be expended on the portion of road approaching small grazing run No. 72.—Cr. Heald moved and Cr. Knox seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to examine the ground and expend Avliat he considered reasonable. —This Avas agreed to. Mr. W. Wilson Avrote asking for compensation for loss of time.—The Chairman moved and Cri T. S. Williams seconded, that the Council informs Mr. Wilson that the Council cannot recognise the claim.—The motion was carried. Air. J. F. Johnson Avrote offering to cut and deliver culvert timber required at £l'2s 6d per 100ft.—The offer AA-as accepted. The Engineer’s report was read and considered. The Chairman moved and Cr.. A. B, Williams seconded, that Mr. O’Ryan be appointed to represent the Council in the Native Land Court Avhen the question of compensation for land taken comes up for hearing.—The motion was carried. The Chairman moved, and Cr. T. S. Williams seconded, that an outhouse suggested be erected.—-This Avas agreed to. Cr. Murphy moved, Cr. PoAvell seconded, and it Avas resolved that steps be taken to acquire land necessary for deviation of a road near Whakauranga. The Overseer’s report was read and considered. , The treasurer’s monthly statement was read. After a lengthy discussion it avos decided to expend the balance of the Waiapu-IvawakaAva grant, and metalling formation already completed. The Council went into committee to open tenders. Oates and Brown’s tender, £471, was accepted. Cr. Heald inquired if there were any prospects of the A'watere-Whangaparoa inland road being proceeded with.— The chairman stated that from remarks made by the Minister of Public Works it appeared there was no chance. The chairman moved, and Cr. Murphy seconded, that the Acting-Premier and Acting-Atinister of Lands be invited to visit the country at an early date, so that tlie Council could have an opportunity of discussing several matters of importance with them. —This was carried. The clerk avos instructed -to write to the Council’s solicitors, directing them to take proceedings against a native of Tupnroa for alleged appropriation of the Council’s timber. Cr. Murphy moved, Cr. Heald seconded, and it was carried, that the treasurer be authorised, to countersign debentures for the £75,000 loan'. The Chairman moved, and Cr. T. S. Williams seconded, that the debentures be signed and application be made for firfff instalment of £3OOO of tho £75.000 loan.—This was carried. The Chairman moved, and Cr. Heald seconded, that the balance-she&t as re-peh-ed from the Auditor-General be adapted.—This, was agreed to. Accounts Avere passed amounting to £::C4 Os 3d. ’ •
