SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
POVERTY BAY CLUB. SECOND DAY. Tlie Poverty Bay Sheep Dog Trials were continued at Ormond yesterday. The weather was beautifully fine, and formed quite a contrast when compared with the conditions which prevailed on the opening day. There was a good attendance of the public, and some most interesting trials were witnessed. Class 1, head, bring back, and yard, was resumed at 8 o’clock, and concluded by the luncheon adjournment. S. Lambert’s Ring, which was placed first by the judge, cast to the right, went out in a good line, headed quietly in 2min lQsec, brought back in a fair line, and quietly ringed in 7 minutes. This dog showed rather good style at holding in the ring. M. Sullivan’s Rag, which was second, cast to the right, went out in good line, but stopped on the face of the hill, and gave one bark when going out. He headed quietly in Imin 55sec, and gave one rash turn when pulling the sheep. He took the sheep into the ring in good line, and ringed in Bmin 30sec. This dog was good at the ring. S. Lambert’s Pat, which was third, cast to the right, but did not go .out in good line, and kept too far to the right. He headed quiets ly in three minutes, but was rather wide in turns while pulling. He brought back in good line, fairly quiet, and ringed in 9 minutes. Rather good at holding in the ring. J. Herbert’s Boy, who was placed fourth, cast to the right, but did not go out in a good line. He zig-zagged too much, and kept too far to the left. He headed a bit rashly in lmin 57see, and did not bring back in a good line. He kept his sheep too far to the right. He was rather noisy :fnd a bit rash when he started to pull, but was better lower down the hill. He was only fair at holding in the ring. H. .T. Kent’s Scott and A. D. Smale’s Turk filled fifth and sixth places respectively.
After the luncheon adjournment a commencement was made with Class 11. • —Huntaway between three lots of flags—and about 20 dogs had been tried by the time operations ceased for the day. Only about two competitors were successful in getting the sheep through all the flags. The sheep, which have been kindly lent by Mr. W. K. Chambers, were in excellent condition, thought at times they proved somewhat stubborn. The following shows the competitors in Class 1 and the points they obtained :
