GISBORNE CLUB

The attendance on the green of 1 the Gisborne Bowling Club yesterday afternoon was large ; every rink was utilised, and there was a considerable margin of spectators. The green, despite the heavy rain of the last few days, was in very fair order, and, aided by* the pleasant weather, play was very enjoyable. A number of match games —handicap fours (Mr. J. F. Pettie’s medals) and champion and colts’ singles—were got off, in addition to several ordinary games. The following were the results of the principal games : —Handicap Fours (second round) — Allen, Burton, Wootton, Benzie (skip) (4), 25, heat Primrose, Robertson (sub), Paltridge, Ponsford (skip) (scr), 24. In the first half of the game the scoring was in favor of Benzie, by the twelfth head, had put up 17. against 11. Ponsford reversed positions by getting a couple on the thirteenth, and no fewer than six on the fourteenth. Benzie then got a single, and Ponsford by scoring three on the sixteenth head obtained a lead of four points. Benzie wiped this out by scoring on three heads, getting half a dozen points thereby, and making his total 24. Ponsford equalised matters by obtaining

singles on the twentieth and twentyfirst heads, so that an extra head was needed. This resulted in favor of Benzie by a single point. Green' (sub), Harris, Zadhariah, Smith (skip) 5, 24, beat Leslie, Dodds, R. G. Crawford, R. Robertson (skip) (4), 21. Smith had all the best of the earlier part of the game, arid had scored 20 points against 9 at the eleventh head. Robertson then improved his position by putting rip eight points on four heads. An interchange of scores followed, and finally resulted in favor of Smith by three points. —Champion Singles.— R. G. Crawford, 19, beat Macmillan, 15. —Colts’ Singles.Hamilton, 24, beat Green, 19. —Ordinary Matches.— * Redstone, Morgan, Brown, T. A. Crawford (skip), .26, beat Townson, Bullock, Witty, Morton skip), 16. Roberts, G. K. Miller, Pettigrew, Hennessy. (skip), 17, beat Sanders, Elliott, W. Pettie, Corson (skip), 16. Cobb, Wilson, F. W. Pettie, Eure (skip), 27, beat Seymour, Williams, Kyme, Craig, 14. THE BURTON TRIOPHY. A meeting of the committee of the Gisborne Bowling Club was held in the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s rooms, last nijght. There was a full attendance, aiic' Mr. W. Pettie president, was in the chair. A sub-committee was appointed to make arrangements in connection, with the competition for the Burton: challenge trophy, to be held at Easter. It was stated that the arrangements, so far were well in hand. Messrs J. Ponsford and F. A. Martin were appointed skips of the rinks which are to represent the Gisborne Club at the competition. It was decided to bold a smoke .concert in; connection with the competition on the evening of Easter Saturday, April 15th. The following teams will represent the Ttiranganui Club in the competition : —■ B. Hird, R. The]wall, A. Sawyer, J. J. Martin (skip). . S. Wootton. M. G. Nasmith, ]um\, I. A. Crawford, I. S.
