Reference has been made to the un'•wiekly schedule of returns demanded by tlie Labour Department from manufacturing' houses, showing wages paid to all hands employed by them. Instances of the large amont of work entailed in the "compilation of the schedule's might be mu'ltipled. _ln one case brought, under the notice of a representative (says the “New Zealand Herald”) an Auckland firm of manufacturers’ and contractors has had four accountants employed throughout the whole of this week -in: making out the returns required in connection with that particular business. Even- now the work is not completed. An anomaly ill the case of the firm referred to is that 40 papers were supplied bv the Department. whereas by the time the vwhole,of their schedule has been written up they will have used nearly 500 forms. 7 . .Tay.— ' “There are. plenty of books telling how to save life while waiting for the doctor.” ' Ivay.— What we need is one telling ns young doctors how to save life while waiting for the f patient.”
