SOCIAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

Miss Whitaker, organiser of the Girls’ Friendly Society movement, is at present on. a visit to Gisborne, and!' the guest pf Mrs. Herbert Williams.

On Monday afternoon last Mrs E. H. Mann invited the of the Mother’s Union to meet Miss W hitaker for a little social intercourse. Owing to the afternoon being so wet, many were unable to avail 'themselves of Mrs Mann’s kind invitation. Afternoon tea was served in the drawingroom, which was prettily decorated with white Michaelmas daisies, terracotta dahlias and autumn leaves. The hostess received in a becoming frcclc of willow-green silk, braided in black Miss Whitaker, the guest of honour, wore a black and white striped silk robe, becoming black hat trimmed with pink roses and black berries. Others present were: Mesdames Herbert Williams de Lautour, Hughes, Akroyd, J. W. Williams, Rogers, Hooper and Smith.

Mrs H. White, Miss White and Mr Eric White are visiting Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs G. Barker are visiting the South Island.

Miss McPhail who has been the guest of Mrs H. White, returned south by Wednesday's steamer.

Miss Kitson, Christchurch, who hap been staying with Miss Nolan, Opitl, Kaiti, returned south on Wednesday.

Mr A. E. W. Smith, at one time on the staff of the Loan and Mercantile. but now of Napier, is to be married next week to Miss Stewart, of Paliiatua.

The friends of Mrs G. Sheriff will re-

gret to hear that she is at presen lying in a private hospital in a precari oHs state of health.
