COW MANURE.
HOW TO UTILISE IT
The experiments at the New Jersey experiment station showed tnat eacn cow voided in manure and urine /(Mb a daw. The prodction for the year then would be I2f tons. The urine is wm more than the solid manure.. It has been estimated that the urine of a 10001 b cow-was worth 13 dollars a yeai and that- of a horse 18 dollars a year-' How correct this is we cannot say. Bur there is certainly enough of value m it to induce the farmers to save u all. There is less loss in all of the elements of manure if it is hauled upon the land as soon as made every day than n allowed to stand ini heaps. But it it must accumulate in heaps, as is the case in summer-time, it is a good thing to sprinkle a few pounds of land plaster on it each day to- absorb and hold the ammonia until the soil can get i . The more a farmer studies this proposition of keeping up the fertility of tiis land the more important does the preservation and measures he takes to preserve the manure become. This means true economy. Passing a farm the other day we saw a farmer-hauling out manure that had lain in the barnya id n year. It had lost fully half of its original value. But that was not all of the foolish things he was doing He was dropping Tt in heaps on the lantl instead of spreading at once as fast as hauled when the work could be done at the least expense of labor. V ery likelv those heaps will remain unspread •for a month or two. We have seen them remain until spring. Now, . Had that farmer a clear sense of economy of labor and the right idea of getting the full' value of Ins manure? He think not. , It is these wastes. .and there ore many • of them, that call for constant preacli'ing. constant effort to. make men read, •‘ think.’ and understand their work.
