“I am very sorry, and if you will give me a chance I will go back to work,” said a penitent inebriate, named Samuel Johnston, who was charged with drunkenness before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., on Saturday morning. Sergt. Hogan stated that the man had been convicted twice during that week and three times during the past six months, and suggested that his Worship should make a prohibition order against him. “I am afraid I will have to delay you,” said the Magistrate, in reply to the accused’s overtures. “I think it very necessary that you should be kept in custody for a few days.” A sentence of seven days’ imprisonment was inflicted and in addition the prohibition order asked for was ordered to be issued.

A Press Association telegram states that the Levin to Greatford railway deviation route was discussed last Friday night at a meeting of settlers of Levin and district. A speech by the Mayor of Levin showed that the acreage covered by the proposed route was 300,000; practically 400 square miles of country at the present time not served by railway would be reached and the present Main Trunk line journey would be reduced by 1-5 miles in length and an hour in time, as the route was more level than that via Palmerston. It was unanimously resolved to request the Government, to take, immediate action. The matter was referred to the Levin Chamber of Commerce.
