TRAGEDY ON MAIN TRUNK LINE.
YOUNG WOMAN FALLS FROM CARRIAGE PLATFORM.
IS KILLED INSTANTANEOUSLY. LPER PRESS ASSOCIATION.} WELLINGTON, April 9. A single woman named Nellie Oates aged 26, fell off tlie Auckland-bound express yesterday between Otaki and Hanakau, and was killed. The deceased, who came from Christchurch, was travelling to Palmerston North with her mother. The deceased’s brother went from Palmerston and took the body there, where an inquest will beheld. PALMERSTON N., April 9. The body of Ellen Louise Oates, who was killed on the Main Trunk train near Otaki yesterday, was brought to Palmerston North last night by her brother, the well-known cycle and photographic agent. Miss Oates had been staying with another brother at Wellington. She was not in good health, and was on her way to her brother at Palmerston North with her mother.. When about two miles north of Otaki she went on to the platform, and fell between the two carriages. By the time the- guard could be informd the express was tar past, and stopped at Manakau, where railway men were sent back with n trolley. They found the body, terribly mangled, and with one leg severed, They took it back to Otaki. Death must have been instantaneous. An inquest will be opened to-morrow morning to take Mrs Oates’ evidence, and permit the body being taken for burial to Christchurch, where the deceased resided.
