ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

DR. MAWSON AT THE GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.

AN INTERESTING DISCUSSION

t UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION- -COPY RIGHT. J LONDON, April 11. Dr. Mawson, . speaking before, the Geographical Society, dwelt on the possibilities of predicting weather for Australia and the desirableness of establishing a meteorological station at Adele Land and westward thereof. Mr Leonard Darwin, who presided, predicted that Captain Scott’s expedition would yield splendid, scientific work. Regarding Captain Amundsen, he said that while no explorer had any vested right by exploring, and all foreign competition in the Antarctic was .welcome.* He regretted that Captain Amundsen, did not give an opportunity for discussing his plans before 'leaving Europe. He was glad .that the most cordial relationship had been established between the Norwegian and British expeditions. It must not be supposed that the grant of £SOO measured the Society’s goodwill towards Dr. Mawson’s expedition. Sir G. H. Reid paid a tribute to Dr. Mawson for his pluck, knowledge, and devotion to pure science. The Australian Government had helped a number of British expeditions. 4Yhv should not the British Government help Dr. Mawson’s? The Geographical Society had done far more for Dr. Alawson’s work than giving £SOO. It had endorsed the project.

Lord Lamington emphasised the probable result of mineral discoveries.

Sir. Ernest Slmekleton warmly wished Dr. Mawson success.
