THE CHAMPAGNE TROUBLE.
RENEWED RIOTING.
ENORMOUS DESTRUCTION OF
WINE
'UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.! (Received April 12, 11.30 p.m.) PARIS, April 12. The action of the Government in referring to the Council of State the whole question of delimitation of the champagne area., is much discussed.' The climax -was reached when the Senate by 213 to 62, expressed confidence that the Government would submit' to Parliament at the earliest opportunity a Bill securing; the repression of fraudulent practices without maintaining territorial delimitation calculated to provoke. division among Frenchmen. M. Zolbers, of the Aube Defence Committee', informed the mandatories that, failing’ the unconditional inclusion of Aube in the. delmited area, it was preferable that all demilitatdon should bo abolished and any anti-adulteration laws strengthened. Indescribable scenes in the Valley of Marne followed. Thousands of vinegrowers spontaneously assembled, marched to Dixy, attacked one firm s cellars, smashed 230,000 bottles of wine, and barricaded three- streets with vats, benches, presses, and other material. The gendarmes and dragoons restored order.
Many demonstrations and counterdemonstratioiis occurred elsewhere.
