THE KING AND THE CHURCH.
“ASSISTANCE TO PURIFY AND ENNOBLE LIFE.” The King, in replies to the Convocations, promised to assist the labours of the Church “to purify and ennoble the public and private life of the nation.” Both the Convocations presented addresses adopted at last month’s sittings. The King received, tlie deputations of the Archbishops, Bishops, and others at Buckingham Palace, and replied to the addresses as follows: Convocation of Canterbury. You may count upon my assistance in tlie labours of the Church to purify and ennoble the public and private life of the nation, and to seek the consolations of Christian truth in their simplicity and perfection. I know that the Church is turning her mind with a vivifying energy to the problems of poverty and destitution to which you particularly refer, and that her bands are extended in Christian comradeship to all good men of every creed or party who arc striving to raise the standards of health and morals and to make our country a home for all its people. Convocation of Yofk. I value your appreciation of my wish to follow 7 the illustrious example of my father in- discharging the duties and responsibilities to which I have succeeded. It will always be my endeavour, with God’s help, to maintain and consolidate the foundations of public and private virtue which you labour to preserve and on which tlie welfare of my people rests.'
