ADVANCES TO WORKERS.
■ THE ERECTION OF HOMES. Despite the fact that repeated application has been made to the Government for suitable land in Gisborne on which workers could erect dwellings, nothing has been done. The local Labour Department has received numerous inquiries regarding the matter, but, as there is no land, the officer in charge is unable to give them much satisfaction. Some misapprehension appears to. exist amongst workers as to the difference, between the Workers’ Dwellings Act and the Advances, to Workers provisions of the New Zealand State-guaranteed Advances Act. The latter provisions were enacted for the purpose of enabling a “worker” (as defined by the Act) who wishes to erect a dwelling on his own land to obtain a loan for the purpose. The amount of loan must not exceed three-fourths of the total value of land and dwelling. Under the Workers’ Dwellings Act, a “worker” (as defined in that Act) may apply for a worker’s dwelling, and the amount of deposit required from him is only £lO ; but the dwelling must be erected on land set apart for the purpose of workers’ dwellings. The rate of interestcharged will be 5 per cent., while under the Advances to Workers’ Provisions the loaf nmav be obtained at per cent, interest. Full particulars, forms, etc., regarding loans under the Advances to Workers provisions may lx? obtained from the Superintendent, State-guaranteed Advances Office. Wellington, or from any postmaster in the Dominion; and particulars, etc., concerning the Workers’ Dwellings Act. from any office of the Department of Labour. Air Westbrooke has received l a number of-plans of workers’ dwellings and will supply the necessary information.
