AN UNUSUAL CASE.

AN UNWILLING WITNESS

(PER PEESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, April 20. A case piesenting some unusual features came before the City Police Court yesterday, when Cecil Lean, a youth, was charged' with throwing a missile on March 24th. Among witnesses called by the police was Horace Edwards, a farm labourer. He first of all denied remembering the evening of March 24th. Then he denied knowing anything about the case or having spoken about it to Mounted Constable Hodgson, or having been asked any questions about it, or about anything, by Hodgson. He denied ever having seen Hodgson before the 13th April, when the constable served a subpoena and a. summons (Edwards being the defendant in another case arising out of the stone-throwing). Even then he did not know Hodgson was a constable.. Edwards was warned by the Magistrate and Sub-Inspector Cruickshank, but he professed complete ignorance, of the whole affair. The case against Lean was dismissed. Cecil Lean, Frank Guy, and Horace Edwards were then charged with using indecent and obscene language. They elected to be tried summarily, and pleaded not guilty. His Worship added: “With regard to this man Edwards, I am not going to indicate any course, but my notes are available; and (to the sub-inspector) you had better take advice.”
