ENTERTAINMENTS.
PATHE PICTURES
Tli© ever-entertaining Pathe Pictures attracted another large and enthusiastic audience last night, that being the last occasion of the screening of the very popular “Heredias’’ series. A new and varied programme of pictures will be screened this evening and will be shown for one night only. A fine selection of topical, scenic, dramatic and comic films are included in the series, the star item being a depiction of the recent British Army manoeuvres. The inspiring spectacle of the movement of great bodies of troops seen in the picture has won unlimitd applause elsewhere, and it s expected that the theatre will be taxed to its utmost this evening. “The Pathe Gazette” detailing notable events which have reoenily transpired throughout the Commonwealth is also a valuable unit in this selection. A scenic film entitled “Broncho-breaking in the Argentine” furnishes an excellent description of the methods employed in breaking-in the horses on the Argentine ranches and some fine exhibitions of daring riding are shown. Another scenic film, entitled “A Tour of the Southern Alps” is said to profoundly impress the beholder with the sublime beauty of the scones presented. A drama of salient merit is that entitled “The Message of the Violin.” Of comics there.is great variety, including “An Original Cross-country Race,” which is a really laughable subject, in which the competitors iride wearing dress suits, top hats and iroller skates. Besides those named, “Father buys a Screen,” ‘An Easy Winner,” “The Kid,’ ’and “The Quarry Master” arc included in the series. ROLLER SKATING. There was a record l attendance at the roller skating rink last night, the wet night appearing to deter the skating enthusiasts from their favourite amusement. There was also a large crowd of onlookers present, the appearance of the lary wearing the harem skirt drawing many people to the rink. Shortly after 8.30 the expectant crowd were rewarded by 7l the sight- of a lady in the now celebrated costume appearing among the skaters during the “jladfies with partners’ ’part of the session. Many of the audience had come sceptical as to the bona fides of the wearer being of the gentler sex, but when she appeared all doubts were set at rest. An enjoyable evening’s skating was indulged in, the wearer of the novel garment being greatly in demand as a partner. To-day the rink will be open for the morning and afternoon only, as the hail is to be used by the volunteers to-night. To-morrow the rink will be open all day, startng with the children’s matinee at 10 a.m.
