NEW YORK THEATRE A GAMBLING HELL.

Believing that one of the lesser theatres here was being used for illegal purposes the police clambered on to the roof, this afternoon opened a skylight, and slid 53 feet down a rope to the floor of the building. Their efforts were rewarded. The place was packed with- men and women, and every conceivable game of chance was in progress. Blackboards on- the stage displayed horse-racing entries and betting prices, and thousands of dollars were being staked. The officers made 82 arrests.
