SUGAR BONUSES.
THE NEW ZEALAND SUGAR CO-.’S SYSTEM. ESPECIAL TO TIMES.] AUCKLAND, April 21. On making inquiry at tlie Colonial Sugar Co.’s office this morning a “Star” reporter was informed of the system which is in operation in regard to sugar bonuses. The Secret Commissions Act of last session necessitated the cessation of the bonus system' referred to in the telegram from Grey mouth. Under that system a. bonus- of 10s per ton was allowed to a firm doing business with the company. When the new law came into operation, and that concession was no longer allowed, the company reduced the price of sugar by 10s per ton, so that it made no difference to the consumers. The only term the company now has is a trade discount for a quantity, in addition to the ordinary discount of % per cent, for prompt cash payments. The company is allowing a discount for quantity on the following scale: —Payments of over £SOO per month, 1 per cent, discount; over £2500 per month, 3 per cent, discount; and over £IO,OOO per month, 4-J- per cent, discount. Evidently it is to these terms which take the form of ordinary trade discounts, that the Gremouth people are taking exception.
