ELECTION JOTTINGS.
An idea prevails that only ratepayers are allowed to vote at the forthseoming municipal elections. This is incorrect. Every person whose name appears on th.e municipal roll has the right to vote on all three issues—the Mayoralty, and the election of Borough Councillors and members of the Harbor Board. The Borough Returning Officer, Mr H. M. Porter, lias decided that, for the convenience of ratepayers and bur-o-esses residing in Kaiti it is necessary for a polling booth to be opened there on Wednesday, and for that purpose lie has engaged Mr H.'AI. Home’s shop, on AA'ainui road. Air John Slieridan, who is a candidate for the Mayoralty, is to address a meeting of ladies at AVootton’s .rooms at 3.80 p.m. to-day, and he will deliver another public address in His Majesty s Theatre at 8 p.m. . The Mayor (Air W. D. Lysnar) is to address the electors in His Alajestv s Theatre to-morrow evening at 8 o’clock. Arrangements will be made. to show lantern pictures or the Te Arai waterworks Edison’s electric storage battery tramcar and harbour works in various parts of the world. Arrangements are being made for a monster meeting in the Garrison Hall to-morrow night, at which all the candidates for municipal honours are invited to deliver 15-minute addresses. It is understood that Alessrs John Clark and Geo. Alatthewson have been re-appointed Government nominees on the Harbour Board. A fairly large crowd assembled at the Sievwright memorial on Saturday night, when the Labour c-anidates for seats on the Borough Council and Harbour Board delivered speeches. A report of the meeting appears elsewhere in this issue. Air Geo. Smith, who is a candidate for a seat on the Borough Council, is at present suffering from the result. of an accident which befell him while inspecting the recent additions to the Alasonie Hotel. A trapdoor had been left open, and Air Smith, not noticing it. fell through, striking his knee with considerable force against the edge of the aperture. His presence of mind in catching hold of the sides saved him from falling right through and. in all probability much more serious injury. Air F. Lowndes, a candidate for the “l>ayers of dues” seat on the Harbour Board, had a narrow escape from possibly serious injury on Saturday afternoon. He was driving a young horse along Childers Road, when the'Animal l>egan to get restive and to kick violently. He swerved right across the road, and Air Lowndes was thrown heavily out of the cart on to the muddy road. Tire horse thereupon bolted, and collided heavily with Alessrs Williams and Kettle’s store, suffering injury to its legs. The cart was badly damaged, but Air Lowndes escaped without more than a slight shaking. The Alayor (Air AT. D. Lysnar) has an address to the electors in this issue. He also announces that he and Airs Lysnar will be pleased to meet the lady burgesses at the Arayoral residence tomorrow.
