LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS.

OUTSIDE RETURNS. LPEE PRESS ASSOCIATION J Auckland.—The elections aroused considerable interest, and the polling was faiif- heavy. The Mayoral contests have resulted as follows: —Birkenhead: J. G. Kay 62, H. M. Shepherd 322. Nortlicote: IT. Cad ness (present Mayor) 335, A. E. G-reenslade 320. Onelnmga: J. Rowe (Mayor) 923. A. S. Holmes 251. At- Hamilton J. A. Young (present Mayor) was re-elected. Grey Lynn: W. H. Murray was elected Mayor. Tlie Auckland City Council election resulted in the return of Messrs Court, Entrican, Mennie, Gleeson, Shaw. Mackay, Casey, Tudehope, Knisrht. Read, Dickson, Nerheny, Trevithick. Michaels, Gaudin. The Labor ticket of three were almost at tlie bottom of the poll. The Harbor Board election resulted in the -return of Messrs Hutchison-, Alison, Heather, Virtue, Fisher. Ivneen. Bond, Keys, Guuson, Bradney, Entrican, Adams, Bagley, J. E. Taylor, and Rutherford. Hastings.—Mayoral: Garnett 1256, Thompson 499, Lane 386. Harbor Board: Eustace Lane 1573, J. A. Miller 556.

New Plymouth.—J. B. Connett, thechairman was re-elected, with C. E. Bellringer, a new member, to the New Plymouth Harbor Board for that borough. In the Borough Council elections the new Municipal Progressive Association ran nine candidates, and secured eight seats, of which four are members of the- old Council. Only one of those opposed to the “ticket” was elected, and he was also a. member of the old Council. Tlie “Progressives” are pledged to trams and a greater New Plymouth scheme. Palmerston North.—Great interest was taken in the Council election, there beino- 23 candidates. Tlie polling was heav— and the following were elected: Armstrong, Nathan, Hay don, Mowlem, Clausen, Stubbs, McCarthy, O’Reilly, and Beale. Pahiatua.—Mayoralty: W. W. McCardle (retiring Mayor) 247, A. Weston 131.

Feildinig.-—Municipal elections: A. Richmond, G. J. Harford, R. Heald, P. Thomson, G. H. Saywell, G. Wells, A. M. Ongley, J. T. Barry and B. E. Murphy were returned. Eltham.—Very keen interest was taken in the Mayoral election. There were three candidates, J:.P. Wake being returned. Wanganui.—The Borough Council election resulted in the return of Messrs Poynter, Liffiton, Burgess, Muir, Spriggins, Oalver, Robinson. Holloway, and Spurdle. The contest for the Harbor Board created intense interest, and resulted in favor of Messrs Mackay, Bassett, Bignell, Meuli, Williams and John Jones. Messrs Murray and William Ritchie were elected as Waitotara representatives, and Mr. Poison was elected as Wanganui County representative. There was great jubilation over the result of the Board election, which indicates confidence in the old Board’s policy to prosecute extensive works, which it is confidently expected will allow ocean liners to berth at the port within five years. Wanganui East Council election resulted in the return- of Messrs McOaul, Benefield, Burton, Beaven, Willis, Wickham, O’Leary, Thompson. Westport.—Mayoral: J. A. GreonAvood was, for the fifth consecutive year, returned, defeating L. Q. O’Brien by 975 votes to 591. In the Council elections all former members Avho Avent to the poll were returned, Avith one exception, Councillor Leaver heading‘the poll. Greymouth.—A good deal of interest centred in the municipal election. A C ! . Russell was re-eleced Mayor unopposed. There were thirteen candidates for nine seats on the Council, resulting in T. V. Byrne, G. Greenslade, J. Jackson, Jas. Kerr, E. Perkins-, E. Sheedy, G Sweetman, John Tennent, and R. Russell being elected, four out of the five candidates nominated by the Labor party being succesful. Ashburton.—John Lambie and Hugo Friedlander have been re-elected to- represent the County and Borough of Ashburton on the Lyttelton Harbor Board. Timaru.—Mr. Buxton, M.P., was reelected Mayor of Temuka, and Mr. Craigie, M.P., re-elected Mayor of Timaru for the tenth time.
