STEAMER ATTACKED BY CANNIBALS.
BROADSIDES OF SCALDING W ATER , . ■United press association— copyright.] NEW YORK, May 8. The British steamer Kasenga struck a reef off Womazi Island, German East Africa and was attacked by a thousand cannibals, who were repulsed by broadsides of steam/ and scalding water.
THE STORY PROBABLY AN EXAGGERATION. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION..] TIMARTJ, May 9. Referring to the cable to the evening papers as to the steamer Ivasenga being on a reef and attacked by cannibals off German West Africa, Mr C. H. Mason, of Timaru, is a correspondent of Mr. Brooking, an ex-Timaruian, third engineer of the vessel, whose last letter, from East London, when bound to New York, stated that, the Kaseuga had been aground for some hcluis on ia. sand hank. °This is probably the whole basis of the New York story.
