THE MOSQUE OF OMAR.

STORY OF THEFT UNFOUNDED

(UNITED PEEB3 ASSOCIATION -COPYRIGHT.]

CONSTANTINOPLE, May 8. Advices from Jerusalem suggest that the story of theft- at the mosque of Omar, cabled on the 4th, is unfounded. It is attributable tto a political desire to discredit the Governor of Jerusalem, and Sheik Khalil, who is acting custodian of the mosque, [The cablegram referred to was as follows: “An expedition under Captain Parker and a brother of Eail Morley has spoilt £60,000 in two years in searching the rook-cut passages near the Pool of Si loam, particularly for treasure, which it is believed lies buried there. Letters from Jerusalem state that reports that Solomon’s crown and sceptre had been transferred to Captain Parker’s yacht at Jaffa- led to riots, jeopardising the lives of Christians and representatives of the Young Turks, who were suspected of favoring the excavators. Other reports allege the profanation of the mosque of Omar, the excavators entering at night, after bribing the attendants, and securing valuable relics.”]
