At tns invitat.cn of Mr. Basil Sharp, a few friends of Mr. R. Quirke, who is leaviiinr the district, met at Mr. Sharp’s residence last night to bid him farewell, ar.d wish him success in the district wnere he intends to take up his residence and follow up his profession. Several, felicitous speeches were made, and a very pleasant evening spent, with song, story, and recitation. Mr. Quirke contributed largely to the evening’s enjoyment, with Iris Lindsay Gordon selections, of which works he is no mean exponent. 7 Mr. and Mrs. A. Foster left for America, via Auckland and the Islands, yesterday. Mr. C. lies, son of Mr. W. lies, of Gisborne, gained first-class honors in one sub;ect of the winter session at the Edinburgh University. Mr. F. de Lautour, sou of Mr. C. A. de Lautour, has completed his final examination at- the Farad a v Electrical College, and was the gold medallist for the year. He has now gone to Southampton to take up electrical work. Rev. Mr. T\ illiams was a passento Giftfco.. no from Auckland bv lastnights steamer. Mr J. A. Caesar and family, who have been spending a holiday at Rotorua, were among the passengers from Aticiiiand by the Monowai last night. filr. J. Coleman returned from Auekeity by the Monowai last night. Mr. H. J. Brownlee, who is to attend a ireetin-g of the Institute of Architects at- Wellington, left- on a visit to that ci'fv by the Monowai lot night. Mr. H. B. V. illiams leaves New Zealand in the course of a fortnight to the Heme Country. He will travel via Vancouver. and expects to return to the Dominion about November.
