Gunson was elected chairman for the ensuing twelve months, Air W. E. Hutchinson being appointed deputy-chair-man. IRISH ENVOYS. HASTINGS, May 10. The total amount collected at Hastings for the Irish envoys was £l6O. THE (SEWERAGE WORKS STRIKE. The borough employe 8 ’ strike lias ended, the Council agreeing to abandon the proposal to have the sewer excavations done by day work. The original piecework system has been reinstated, and the men return to work when the weather clears. LOAN FOR TAIHAPE. TAIHAPE, May 10. A poll, held yesterday, to increase the loan for town hall buildings from £4OOO to £6OOO was carried, there being only five dissentients. Y.M.C.A CAAIPAIGN. WANGANUI, May 10. The Y.M.C.A ten days’ campaign to raise £7SOO commenced, here this morning, and! already £317 5 has been promised, including £IBOO donated by a resident for.the purchase of a site. Last evening an enthusiastic rally was held, which was addressed by the Hon. G. Fowids. The committee hope to have the amount! raised in the period mentioned. e OPIUM SMOKING. WELLINGTON, Alay 10. Chung Yofung, for opium smoking and being found in possesion of opium, was fined £ls to-day. DEFENCE REGULATIONS. Between April 29 and May 6, 25,096 persons registered under the defence scheme, as follows: Auckland 4631, Wellington 1537, Canterbury 1504, OtagO' 1559. The Defence authorities esimated that 25,400 have still failed to register and must do so before June 2nd.,
