HAWKE’S BAY PRESBYTERY.
MEETING AT ORMOND. The Hawke’s Bay Presbytery met in ( the Ormond Presbyterian, Church in the afternoon, of yesterday at 3 p.m., the Rev. W. Grant in the chair, when the- discussion of ordinary -busines-s was , proceeded with, •; <• It was agreed, on the motion, of the Rev. H. T. Blair, to award to Mr. T. Parker. Matawliere, the Assembly diploma for his long service of 35 years as a Sunday School teacher in the, Male auri district. A similar application was made and agreed 'to on behalf of Mr Geo. Sandilands, of Napier. A lengthy discussion took place in the question of more frequent representation -of the Poverty Bay district at theHawke’s Bay Presbytery meetings at Napier. The matter was left in the hands of the Rev. W. J- Asher and the southern- members to, arrange. The Presbytery went on, to deal, with some of the Assembly .remits. , The following. minute in reference to the work of the, No-License movement was unanimously carried: “The Presbytery took up consideration of the No-lice.nse movement. as directed by the General Assembly. that each Presbytery should do all in its power to further the No-license movement within their bounds, and the Presbytery resolved that they express their unwavering conviction that the liquor traffic is most baneful in its influence, the fruitful source of numberless crimes and miseries, and ought to be abolished by the vote of the people, and the Presbytery requests .the ministers and people to do all in their power to further the organisation c-f the Nolicense movement within the East Coast electorates.” At 5 pm. the Presbytery adjourned to partake of a sumptuous repast that had been prepared for them. At 6 p.m. the Presbytery met with the office-bearers, and conducted the usual visitation, when the customary questions were put and answered in a mo,si satisfactory manner. Revs. Blair and Waugh were -appointed to draw up a deliverance to be read at the various services of the Ormond charge on the next Sunday. At 8 p.m. a goodly comnany gathered to- listen to the addresses of the _visiting clergymen. At this stage an interesting ceremony was ' performed by the Rev. J. Asher, in the admission to church membership of the son of the manse. The. Rev. F. Tucker was the first speaker, and he gave a very intorestintr and forcible address on “Standing, Alone.” The Rev. P. B. Fraser. M.A., recently appointed Superintendent- of Homo Missions, then, -gave a cultured and excellent address on he “Difficulties we have to encounter in endeavoring to advance the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. The Chairman, Rev. W. Grant, then called upon the popular -minister of Napier to address the gathering. He referred to the noble number of workers who had labored in Ormond during past years. He locked forward to a time when greater spiritual prosperity would come to the splendid Poverty Bav district. This address was on. the “Bible,” when lie emphasised the need for greater study of the Word. A very helpful meeting* was brought to termination by he united singing of the Doxolcgy and the Benediction. The Presbytery meets the Matawne.ro congregation* this (Friday) evening, the office-bearers at 7 and the congregation at 8. Helpful addresses will be given by the visitors, and refreshments will be provided bv the ladies of the congregation-. ________
