WELLINGTON, May 10. In regard to the recognition of Mr Claude’s services for his prompt action in averting a collision between a runaway train and the Main Trunk express the * Railway Department states that the matter ‘is under consideration. No action of any kind has yet been taken.
A MYSTERIOUS CRIME. CHRISTCHURCH, May 10. At an inquest on the body of a child found in a sugar bag in the river Avon, the medical evidence showed that the child had been born on Sunday or Monday, and had probably died within two hours after birth. The umbilical cord had not been cut or tied, and the child had died of hemorrhage. There was no ■evidence as to the identity of the parents. ALLEGED THEFT OF WATER, DUNEDIN, May 11. At St, Bathan’s to-day a man'named Ne.il Nicolson was committed for trial for the alleged theft of water from the Scandinavian Sluicing Co.’s race. MOTOR CYCLIST PENALISED. TIMAR.U, May 11. Mr. Dav S.M., to-cla- fined a motor cyclist £3 for furious riding in town, remarking that “high speeds in town was almost criminal.” TIM Alt U BOROUGH COUNCIL, The Borough Council sat late last night over the estimates. Some increases were made in the salaries, the Town Clerk by £25 to £4OO, the engineer by £SO to £4OO, the juniors were also raised, and'all the workmen by 6d a day. It is estimated jtliat the receipts will be £33,588 and the expenditure somewhat more. CORONATION, CELEBRATIONS. The Coronation is to be 'celebrated here by an open-air service. There will be an entertainment by the school children and street processions by day and at night with illuminations. NEW ZEALAND GRAND LODGE. CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. The annual convention of the New Zealand Grand Lodge was dlosed to-day at a sitting which lasted from 9.30 a.m. until noon. The business dealt with matters affecting the internal Working of Lodges. This afternoon the visiting brethren were taken for a mi tor drive around the city and suburbs, and a reception was held during the afternoon at the house of Mr, J. J. Dougall, Deputy Grand Master (at Fendalton), and in the evening a ball was held in Alexander Hall. AN OFFICIAL DECREE. WELLINGTON, May 11.
