POVERTY BAY HOUNDS.

A GOOD DAY’S SPORT AT AVHATATUTU.

The week-end meet of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club took place at Whatatutu on Saturday. The weather was ideal, and the beautiful day tempted' a very large number of members out, there being fully 40 ladies and gentlemen in the party. A start was made at 11 a.mi:/ and after a short search a hare was raised, hut after a short gallop of half-a-mile it was lost in. the scrub. The hounds Avere then called off. and the flats were tried. A strong hare Avas started from a gully, which gave the field an excellent run. To got after pussy a nasty creek had tto be negotiated at the start, the banks of which were so steep and the bed so hoggv that all riders had to dismount and lead their horses over. A wire fence Avas the first jump encouintorecl, and the course then lay over a- small hill. Here the quarry was lost for a time in the scrub, but the bounds soon had him going again. From here on puss led the field at a rattling pace for about four miles over very sporting country. After on© of tb©" best runs the club has enjoyed for a long time, the chase ended in. puss being lost in the dense scrub on the road. A capital run was finished by tlie party negotiating two stiff nickers, which tested the staying power of the mounts at the end of their long gallop. Among these out were Misses Ensor and Sherratt. Mesdames Pattullo, Gaddum, and Messrs AV. G. Sherratt (Master), H. De Lau'tour (Deputy Master), P. AValsli (Huntsman). Pattullo, Gaddum, Thomas, Dimmoek, Campbell (3), AV. MacDonald, P. Hickey, Akroyd, Gordon, Holclsworth (2), E. V. Palmer, Martin, Master Gaddum (Acting Whip), and a largo number folloAving. At the conclusion of the. day’s snort, the party were hospitabiv 7 entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and Mrs. E. A r . Palmer at their residence.
