It transpires that the commander of the Japanese Antarctic expedition has returned to Japan to furnish his Government Avith a report as to the causes of the failure. A member of the party stated that they realised that the A'essel was unfitted for polar exploration. They expect, as a result of the commander’s report, to be recalled 1 to Japan in a feAv weeks. The member added that the party were not thoroughly seized of the conditions they would have to encounter in the Antarctic, and Avould he better prepared next time.
